Richard A. Pittman VA Clinic

A Long-Term Plan to Improve Access to Care for Veterans

A highly-anticipated U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Community Based Outpatient Clinic the Richard A. Pittman VA Clinic helps to close critical care gaps for veterans living in several counties previously serviced by the now decommissioned Livermore VA Medical Center. Part of the Livermore Realignment project undertaken by the VA to provide better care to veterans in the area, the new facility has the capacity to serve nearly 210,000 veterans in the region.

The new clinic is part of a plan to improve access to care in the area. HDR’s architecture and engineering teams provided master planning and full design efforts for the Livermore Realignment which resulted in the decommissioning of the existing 113-acre Livermore campus, a new CBOC in the East Bay on nine acres in southern Alameda County in the City of Fremont, and three new, co-located facilities including a CBOC, Community Living Center and Engineering and Logistics building on 52 acres in Stockton.

Richard A. Pittman VA Clinic Ribbon Cutting Day

The Richard A. Pittman VA Clinic marks the first phase of implementation of the overall masterplan — a 158,000-square-foot CBOC that will provide area veterans with much needed medical services including women’s health, mental health, speech pathology, geriatrics, surgery, neurology, radiology and urgent care, among others. More than 1,000 government officials, local veterans, and VA officials were present to celebrate the clinic's opening.

Honoring Our Heroes

The facility has been named the Richard A. Pittman VA Clinic, after Stockton’s only Medal of Honor recipient, who advocated for the expansion of veteran health care, but did not live to see the project's completion. A Stockton native, Pittman served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was awarded a Medal of Honor by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 for showing courage when he saved his comrades who came under fire during an ambush attack.
